Gabriel Iglesias Shares How His Real Life Inspired Netflix’s 'Mr. Iglesias'

Gabriel Iglesias Zoomed with Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday, July 8, and shared how his hit Netflix series, Mr. Iglesias, was inspired by his real life.

Mr. Iglesias follows Gabriel as a hilarious high school teacher who tries to make a difference in the lives of some smart, but underperforming students, at his alma mater.

“It’s a lot like me and believe it or not, I was actually in line to be a school teacher,” Gabriel shared with Seacrest on-air. “I took a course in high school called ‘Exploratory Teaching’ and we would go to elementary schools and teach lesson plans to young students and the teacher told me ‘I think you’re going to be a really good teacher.’ And I said, ‘My lesson plan was horrible. Why do you say I’m going to be good?’ And she said, ‘Oh, no, I agree, your lesson plan was horrible, but you were able to do something the other students weren’t able to do: you were able to get their attention.’”

Gabriel added that he had a “gift” so they even offered him a scholarship at Long Beach Unified School District.

“Clearly I chose a different path,” Gabriel added. “But I had that opportunity.”

Teaching though is what kick-started his comedy career.

“I didn’t realize I was doing standup in the class,” he shared of how he secured the kids’ attention. “The kids were just glued to me. … I was already performing and I didn’t realize it.”
