Billions of Cicadas Could Soon Swarm Parts of North Carolina

Leave it to 2020 to bring another unfortunate circumstance to North Carolina, as well as Virginia and West Virginia. One of the biggest broods of cicadas is about to emerge from the ground after 17 years.

According to Magicicada.org, the 17-year periodical cicada Brood IX will emerge in late May to early June. It's estimated that one million cicadas per acre will swarm over the state.

Once the cicadas hatch, they will make the loud, awful sound everyone hears when cicadas are around, to mate and lay eggs. The good news is that they should die off within a couple weeks of mating.
