"Space Jam: A New Legacy" Slams Its Opening Weekend

$31.65 Million... and that's with it being available to everyone on HBO.

Ever since it was announced, I would be a liar if I didn't say I was skeptical about the reboot of one of my favorite movies growing up, and I was REALLY skeptical about whether or not it was actually going to do well in theaters. When Covid-19 hit, I was almost certain that this movie wasn't going to even make its money back, but as of today, I couldn't have been more wrong.

Space Jam: A New Legacy now has the record for the best opening box office during the pandemic, beating both Marvel's most recent Black Widow film and the previous pandemic box office champ, Godzilla vs. Kong. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds a 31% score by critics and an 81% score by audience members, leaving a pretty big gap between the two groups, and I can see why. With theaters finally opening up, I'm sure families have been eager to ditch their quarantine home studios to see a blockbuster on the big screen, making this movie a perfect getaway.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'll probably give it a try! To me, the success of this film is more of a good sign that people are finally comfortable going back to their movie theaters again. I remember last year when "are theaters going to disappear because of the pandemic?" was a thought that would creep back to me constantly, and now, it really feels like things are on the up and up!
