Award shows may have hit their peak, and we may have missed it.
The 2019 American Music Awards aired on ABC earlier this Sunday and celebrated the best artists, old and new, and their music. Halsey, Shawn Mendes, Camilla Cabello, Post Malone, and Billie Eilish, all performed incredible sets and Taylor Swift was finally crowned Artist of the Decade.
However, while the broadcast experienced a slight bump of an increase in viewership (Apporx. 6.7 million), among 18-49 year-olds, the ratings were the lowest they've ever been in history.
Although the American Music Awards may not be as huge as the Grammys, it could be a sign that Millennials are slowly losing interest in tuning into awards shows anymore. Instead, for example, they might rather wait and watch the highlights on Youtube the following day.
It's too soon to judge why awards shows are losing viewers each year, but it'll be interesting to see how the rest of the award shows do with their ratings as the year comes to a close.
