Here Are Some Interesting Facts About Christmas Trees!

Christmas trees are one of the most beautiful traditions about the Christmas season! The lights, tinsel, and ornaments can turn an average tree into a special spot where your family can gather around on Christmas morning! The Christmas tree tradition as we know it today was started in Germany where devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the 16th century Protestant reformer, is generally credited with adding lighted candles to the tree. So, what are a few other facts about the Christmas tree that are interesting? Well, I dug some up for you! Here they are:

  1. The first recorded Christmas tree on display was recorded in the 1830's when German settlers in Pennsylvania erected one.
  2. Most 19th century Americans found the trees to be an oddity. In fact, as late as the 1840's, Christmas trees were seen as pagan and not accepted by most Americans!
  3. By the 1890's, attitudes had changed and Christmas trees we gaining in popularity. Most Americans preferred homemade ornaments.
  4. Electricity brought Christmas tree lights and the ability to have them glow for days. With this, town squares began to have Christmas trees on displays, and having a Christmas tree in the home became an American tradition!
  5. Christmas trees have been sold commercially in the United States since about 1850.
  6. The Rockefeller Christmas tree tradition started in 1933.
  7. President Franklin Pierce, the 14th president, brought the tree tradition to the White House.
  8. The most popular Christmas trees are Scotch Pine, Douglas Fir, Frasier Fir, Balsam Fir, and White Pine.
