The Old Tappen Zee Bridge Over The Hudson Is Demolished!

The Tappen Zee Bridge, which opened in December, 1955, and which was replaced in 2017 by the Mario Cuomo Bridge, had the eastern part of the bridge destroyed in a controlled explosion a few days ago.

The bridge was one of the primary crossings over the Hudson River north of New York City, and carried much of the traffic between southern New England and points west of the Hudson. The bridge was also the longest in New York State.

Workers were going to dismantle the bridge piece by piece, but they heard popping sounds coming from the bridge and deemed it not safe to proceed that way. As a result, a controlled explosion was set up dropping the old bridge straight down into the Hudson River.

To see a snippet of the spectacular explosion, watch the video attached to this blog. It’s quite interesting!
