Thanksgiving: The Origin Of The Annual Holiday!

Thanksgiving is the expression of gratitude. We celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in the month of November. How did this holiday originate?

The Pilgrims founded the colony of Plymouth in December 1620. During that first winter in the New World, 46 individuals, of the 102 that made the trip, perished due to the harsh New England winter.

The following spring, friendly Indians led by Chief Massosoit, help the Pilgrims plant corn. When the corn was harvested in the fall, Governor Bradford proclaimed three days of prayer and thanksgiving. He also invited Massosoit and 90 of his people to celebrate the first crop. This was the first unofficial “Thanksgiving.”

As the country grew, additional colonies began celebrating a special harvest thanksgiving. After the American Revolution, the states continued the custom. In 1863, during the height of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the first National Thanksgiving Day on the last Thursday in November.

In 1941, the United States Congress passed a resolution, which was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which officially fixed Thanksgiving as a federal holiday on the fourth Thursday in November.

So enjoy Thanksgiving with family and friends. It is the one day of the year where you should sit back and reflect on all the blessing you have! Happy Thanksgiving!
