COVID-19: Why You Should Wear Glasses Instead Of Contacts Right Now

Another thing to add onto your daily pandemic worries!

Specialists are now recommending that contact-wearers should switch to contacts during the coronavirus pandemic, and to avoid touching your eyes altogether to avoid spreading the virus.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology website says, "Contact lens wearers touch their eyes more than the average person. Consider wearing glasses more often, especially if you tend to touch your eyes a lot when your contacts are in. Substituting glasses for lenses can decrease irritation and force you to pause before touching your eye.”

Wearing glasses also helps protect your eyes to the virus if it's airborne! They act as a barrier for your eyes.

I personally wear contacts, but have actually switched to my glasses most days anyway because of all the spring allergens in the air. I was instructed a long time ago to wear glasses during allergy season for the same reason: touching your eyes will spread the pollen directly to your eyes and cause some pretty major irritation.

I wasn't even able to open my eyes for a week one year because I put my contacts back in with waaaayyy too much pollen on them. Had to go to urgent care and everything.

Continue staying safe, everyone!
