One Student Dead after Butler High School Shooting Monday

10:35 a.m.

Officials have confirmed that the student has died after being shot by a classmate at Butler High School Monday morning.

9:38 a.m.

According to reports, one student is in critical condition. 

9:15 a.m.

UPDATE: The lockdown has been lifted and parents are allowed to pick up students at the front entrance of Butler High School. 

8:50 a.m.

MATTHEWS, N.C. - Matthews police confirmed Butler High School in Matthews is on lockdown after one student was shot.

The victim was rushed to the hospital. The extent of the injuries is unknown. 

Authorities said another student was taken into custody.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said the single shooter was apprehended and the weapon is in the possession of law enforcement.

Police said this appears to be an isolated incident, and the school has been secured by officers.

Parents are being told to meet at Elevation Church on East Independence Boulevard in Matthews.

CMS said families were alerted about the shooting in a phone call and will continue be updated about the situation that way.
